There’s something special about taking class in a space that has become synonymous with dance in London, and Nicholas Cunningham’s Theatre Jazz Pop-Up at The Manor LDN was no exception. Hosted at one of the capital’s leading dance studios, the evening brought together dancers eager to immerse themselves in the world of Broadway under the guidance of one of musical theatre’s most accomplished performers and choreographers.
From the moment class began, Cunningham’s wealth of experience was evident. Drawing on a career that has taken him across some of the world’s most celebrated productions—including Moulin Rouge, Movin’ Out, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, and the Olivier Award-winning La Cage aux Folles—he shared not only dynamic jazz choreography but the artistry and intention that sit behind every movement.
His impressive résumé also includes appearing in Nine, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Rob Marshall, as well as serving on Broadway as Associate Choreographer and Dance Captain for the Tony Award-winning revival of La Cage aux Folles. With credits spanning productions such as The Phantom of the Opera and The Terms of My Surrender, Cunningham brought a genuine Broadway perspective into the studio.
Rather than focusing solely on technique, the class explored the storytelling that makes musical theatre jazz so captivating. Every combination encouraged dancers to connect movement with character, musicality and performance, creating an atmosphere that felt as much like a rehearsal room as it did a training session.
Hosted in Studio 1 at The Manor LDN, London's sought-after boutique dance studio, the pop-up offered a unique opportunity for the city's dance community to train with an artist whose career has been shaped by some of theatre's most iconic productions. Set within the studio's signature space, complete with premium facilities, professional lighting and an atmosphere designed to inspire, dancers were immersed in an experience that felt every bit as special as the class itself. More than a technical workshop, the evening celebrated the precision, athleticism and artistry of theatre jazz, highlighting the storytelling and performance that continue to define the genre while bringing Broadway-level training to the heart of London.
